DEMOS OF THE MONTH

Jazz guitarist Jeff Miley jumps into the deep end with his unpredictable, far-flung improvs and beguiling jazz-fusion odysseys.  Though he occasionally slips into rote speed scales, he does so with great precision and drive. Miley's mellifluous, understated reading of Charlie Haden's "Silence" is full of thoughtfull, cliche-free linear excursions. His unexpected melodic leaps and imaginative chording inexorably draw you in, delivering a nice balance of atmosphere and aggression. "I'm less concerned with the instrument or the style of music these days," Miley writes. "I'm affected more by whether or not the performer is playing with heart and conviction." He lists various jazz musicians as influences, including Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery, Allan Holdsworth and Miles Davis. Jeff's equipment includes a Greg Back custom solidbody, Mesa Boogie Studio preamp, Peavey Classic power amp and various rack effects.
